TAKANINI WORK
MILE BY VALAMITO PALUSTRE SPRINTS SMARTLY HIGH SEA'S SIX FURLONGS With the inside grass open and the poles out 9ft., the semi-final gallops of candidates for Te Rapa on Saturday were performed in perfect weather at Takanini yesterday. All the work was done the reverse way round. Valamito and Palustre impressed most of the open handicap class, while Silver Glow i demonstrated that he is distinctly on the improve. Flood Tide (Stratton), on the outside, just shaded Valamito (Bartle) at the end of a mile in 1.46 3-5. They ran the last six furlongs in 1.19, and the last three in 39 3-ss. Valamito might have improved if he had been ridden out. It was a good gallop, under the circumstances. Siega (G. Smith), on the inside, Silver Glow (Vaughan), on the outside, and High Sea (Clifford) ran six furlongs in -1.18 3-5, the last three in 40 3-ss. High Sea was a neck in front of Silver Glow, with Siega another neck away. They ran the three furlongs from the six to the three, faster than Valamito and Flood Tide, but came home slower. Silver Glow and Siega hit out better than' usual. Brazilian (Clifford) was going better than Milanion (Vaughan) at the end of five furlongs, the last four occupying 53.3-ss, and the last three 41s. Neither has any immediate engagements,- but they are doing well. Juvenile Sprints The rising two-year-old half-sister to Gay Talkie named Gay Movie (Clifford), ran two furlongs up the back in 265, the first in 12 3-os. She is the first yearling to sprint at Takanini this season, and showed a lot of pace. Lapidariau (T. Green) commenced a length in front of Palustre (Curwen), but the latter was going the better at the conclusion of four furlongs in 50s. The last three were run in 37 4-5s and it was an encouraging gallop. The Foxbridge—Lady Marie filly, after working over a furlong at half pace, trotted round again, and was allowed to go at her own pace over the same furlong, which she ran in 13 4-ss. ■ _ Others to do useful work were Grateful, Arvakur, Pleuron', Saccone, Palustre's sister, Mia Aerea, the Liniond Waterwings colt, the'half-sister to Hot Box and the Foxbridge —Gazelia colt. The Foxbridge representative is a halfbrother to Huntique and is a good-look-ing sort. Jumpers Schooled Chief Lap (P. Mcllroy) and Wykemist (T. Green) gave a good exhibition of jumping over four flights of hurdles, the round occupying 1.58 3-5. It was Chief Lap's best display at Takanini, and he finished three lengths in front. Paddy the Rip, who has been spelling since he contracted a mild cold at the Whangarei meeting, has returned to work under F. Smith's guidance. Feldberg, who has raced for the past two seasons without success, has been leased by Mr. Alex. Walker, owner of Chief Lap and Lapidarian. Feldberg, who is out of a Comedy King mare, has shown pace, but has failed to race well. W. H. Paterson has a good stamp of a jumper who is a half-brother by Lucullus, to Sir Archer. His breeding suggests possibilities as a jumper. , J. Cruse is handling a very nice yearling by Surveyor from Lucille} by liu6ulltis'. He is brown in colour, well grown and has a very prominent jowl. He has been very well done. There are six candidates from Takanini on the first day at Te Rapa, namely Wykemist, Silver Glow, Mia Acrea, Valamito, Palustre and High Sea. F. Smith had C. G. Goulsbro engaged to ride Valamito at Te Rapa and Ellersliei 'but owing to Goulsbro's disqualification, Valamito is at present without a rider.

Kilonsa was in front at the finish, but both could have done better. Knight of Australia (Tremain) was travelling very comfortably throughout «i round in 1.57 4-5. My Money (Fearn) was responsible for a useful effort over a round _in 1.49 2-5, the last six furlongs taking 1.22 1-5. My Money gives promise of making a fair jumper. , . Aero King (McTavish) completed five furlongs comfortably in 1.8 2-5. Bronze Wing (Metcalfe) ran an easy six furlongs in 1.23 3-5. Valmint (Wiggins) and Mundane (Tremain) were on terms at the conclusion of six furlongs in 1.17, the first three in 37 3-ss. It was a pleasing effort on the part of both. Thero was little between All Irish ' (Cammick) and School Song. (Gilchrist) at the end of a solidly-run round in 1.45 2-5, the last six furlongs taking 1.20. All Irish was doing his work well at the finish and is in capital order for his coming engagements. Alvth (Gilchrist), Te Hai (Wiggins) and Ohmaha (Cammick) finished in that order at the end of a smart halfmile in 495. They ran the first furlong in 12 2-ss, and Alyth impressed by the manner in which she travelled over the concluding stages. Shy (Nicolson) was going comfortablv alongside Tybalt (Gilchrist) at the conclusion of six furlongs in 1.17. Shy is very well and may race on the second day of the Waikato meeting. United "(Clarke) jumped two hurdles satisfactorily. He was afterward taken over the sod wall and water jump but repeatedly refused at the stonewall and was not persevered with. Arikira (Craddoek) and Tahao Mea (Watson) wore schooled over four of the pony hurdles and later cleared two of the bigger ones. Tahae Mea displayed plenty of aptitude. King Musk (Craddoek) went oVor four of the pony hurdles at a sound pace and, although he clouted the first two, his display was satisfactory for a beginner.
