SCHOONER YACHT WIRELESS OPERATOR'S LAPSE On a charge pf having illegally used a £2OOO yacht,' Ivor Edward LaingSmith was sentenced to six months' imprisonment in Sydney. Mr. Goldie, S.M., suspended sentence upon Laing-Smith entering into recognisance of £lO to be of good behaviour for two years and to abstain from drink. «
Laing-Smith, 25, a wireless operator, in a written statement, saitf he had been drinking heavily for over a -month. He got together a crew of three and at midnight, on March 9, cut the yacht Windward (schooner) adrift from its moorings in Rushcutters Bay The voyage ended before they had reached Shark Island, the yacht running out of petrol. ' "If 1 had been normal and sober, 1 would not have dreamt of doing what I did," said , the accused. One of the members of the crew, Randel Jackson Grant, 29. salesman, appeared on three charges. 'He seemed to lose control of himself, when I told him the -yacht was stolen, and 6truck me on the mouth," said Detective-Ser-geant Miller,.
Gr«nt was fined £2 for assaulting tho police, £2 for indecent language, and £1 for malicious damage to a policeman's clothes.' '
