LESS UNEMPLOYMENT

AUSTRALIAN STATISTICS BEST POSITION SINCE 1927 [from our own correspondent] SYDNEY, April 29 Unemployment in Australia has fallen to the lowest level since the depression. Alore people are employed now than at any time since August, 1927. These facts are revealed in employment figures. issued by the Commonwealth Statistician, Dr. Rowland Wilson.

In the first quarter of this year only 8 per cent of trades unionists were unemployed. At the depth of the depression in 1932, 30 per cent were unemployed. The percentage has declined ever since.

The estimated number of persons employed in Australian factories in 1936_37 was 15 pec cent greater than in the - pre-depression year 1928-29, and 6 per cent greater than in 1935-36. When the growth in employee population is taken into account, the 1936-37 index number was 5 per cent greater than the 192& 29 and the 1935-36 figures. The index numbers for Australia for 1936-37 indicate a 25 per cent increase in employment in retail stores since July, ,1933 (the first date for which figures are available) and a 5 per cent increase since 1935-36. When the .growth of employee population is taken into account, the increases are 20 per cent since July, 1933, and .4 per cent since 1935-36.
