RIFLE SHOOTING

CITY CLUB'S CHAMPIONSHIP TRIUMPH FOR D. F. ■ PERRIN In winning the City Club's service championship; D. F. Perrin proved that his easy victory at the last Dominion meeting was well deserved, as the opposition he met iji the club is without doubt the strongest in the country. His performances, last season were only second rate, but he has made remarkable progress, .and is now definitely in the first flight of the Dominion's service marksmen. Only a young man, asmarksmen go, he should have many important successes before him. 1 H. Simmonds filled the position of runner-up and was a trifle unfortunate in not scoring a win, as' in a practice .shoot during the season he established ~a range record, which was not included in the championship aggregate. A. G. Devore, long regarded as one of the Dominion's best,, finished a point below Simmonds, his best club form for some time.

F. Bowes caused a mild surprise by shooting • his. way into fourth place. There is no reason why he should not prove a chatnpi'oji under service conditions, as he has done at the bulls-eye side of the sport, and he may be dangerous next season. The club champion, R. C. Russell, was never in a winning position, and C. J. M. Clark, who has had an outstanding run of successes in Auckland, failed to produce anything more than average scores. With the talept available there will be a great fight for places in the club team next season.

With all association meetings finished the season is now practically closed. Taken all round, it has been an excellent one, most clubs in the province having increased their memberships, while the various > prize meet-, ings have drawn excellent entries. The Northland championship held at Whangarei was the first and the standard of shooting was high for Neatly in the season. The' Auckland Association fwas. again unfortunate .in- ,striking bad weather, the attendance being below, what it should, have been for' this reason-. An Auckland team'visited Australia in February and, -although only one was: selected to represent New. Zealand, the others were very well placed, compared with the actual' ' Pomimon representatives, and; Won' workout; of the four service matches. The New Zealand "service title came to Auckland, while there were two placings in the Belt final. The results in the teams shooting were a little disappointing, and if the centre is to make, a good showing in future more . attention must be paid .to preliminary 6rganisati6n ; among possible teamsftien. The final irfeeting was staged at Matamata by the South Auckland: Association at Faster, and it was easily the best.of the season. The range organisation. was perfect, and with the two days taken for the'fixture the programme was completed without any undue strain on the competitors. 1 '
