KOUGHNESS IN PLAT UNION'S FIRM ATTITUDE GROUND Not prepared I SENIOR CLUBS' COMPLAINT A firm attitude toward roughness in filay was adopted by the Auckland Rugby Union management committee last evening when it dealt with the case of W. Smith, a Manukau senior player ordered off by the referee, Mr. J. G. C. Wales, in the Manukau-Gram-mar game at Eden P?irk last Saturday. In reporting the incident the reieres stated that Smith struck the Grammar halfback Swain, knocking him out. Subsequently Smith approached him and expressed regret, stating that he had lost his head. The judicial committee, Messrs. J. L. Coulan, T. pountney, P. Macky and T. P. Laffey, reported heard the evidenre of both the referee and the player concerned. It recommended that Smith be suspended for four playing Saturdays .... .. Mr. 0. S. Harvey: I think the penalty Is too severe. There have been many worse cases. I do not think the player concerned has ever been involved in any trouble be.ore. If all senior players were as clean a Player is Smith is, there would be very little tronble. ' The acting-chairman, Mr. G. Orrell: hav» to be guided by the judicial committee. Ample Penalty Mr. L. Colgan said he agreed with Mr. Harvey. To stand down the player for two Playing Saturdays would be ample penalty. Mr. Orrell said <he judicial committee had been appointed to carry out eertain duties, and they knjw the full facts of the" case. He thought the judicial committees ruling must be upheld. . Mr. F. Herrick: I for one will always •upport the judicial,- committee's ruling, as » matter of principle, irrespective of the Player concerned. Mr. Harvey moved and Mr. Colgan seconded that the penalty be halved. Mr. J. Sweeney: We have not the power to do that. Mr. A. Tilly: Absolutely not. It would be • vote of no-confidence and would be the end of your judicial board. . Mr. A. Biilington expressed the opinion •pat the judicial committee's recommendation was not necessarily binding on the man•lament committee.

On the representation of the Referees' Association it was decided to circularise clubs warning them that only authorised sprigs could be worn, neither metal nor composition sprigs being permitted. A letter was received from the Thames Union intimating that Mr. Arthur Tilb' had been appointed xo represent it on the Auckland Rugby Union. Mr. H. J. Austin waited on the committee to seek permission to enter in the senior reserve grade, under the auspices of the Ponsonby Club, a team representing the Auckland Meat Company. He said that a number of excellent enthusiastic players were available. It was desired if possible to retain their identity. ... Mr. A. Tilly said they would have to be entered under Ponsonby's name or not at all. , The chairman pointed out that the various Naval and Service teams were playing under their own names, although entered by other clubs.

The committee endorsed the action or the junior boys' board in altering the age limit of the senior boys' grade. The case of M. A remit from the Waitete Club . advocated a reduction of the junior weight limit, and the Te Kuiti Club agreed to this provided a senior B competition was started. Piopio and Aria were at first in favour of the junior weight limit remaining as at present, but agreed to a reduction when it was stated that many young footballers were not ready to join the junior ranks owing to the size of tne players who would be opposed to them. It is anticipated that there will be four senior A teams, five senior B teams, five junior teams and three third grade. To permit of the reorganisation necessary, opening day was postponed for a week."
