DIPLOMAT MISSING
HERR VON PAPEN DISGRACE REPORTED VIENNA, April 20 Friends are concerned for the fate of Herr Franz von Papen, who is reported to be in disgrace. He could not be traced in Germany last night. The Viennese newspapers have been forbidden to mention his name.
Herr von Papen, formerly German Ambassador to Austria, was reported on October 18 last to have been transferred to Rome, but subsequently returned to Vienna whence he had been ll temporarily recalled to Berlin. According to a message from Ankara on March 29 he was appointed Ambassador to Turkey on that date. In the Nazi "purge" on June 30, 1934, Herr von Papen, who was in disfavour with Herr Hitler because of his criticisms of the Nazi regime, escaped death but was kept under guard. He tendered his resignation after the
"purge," but President Hindenburg refused to accept it and on July 7, 1934, Herr von Papen was appointed Herr Hitler's special envoy to Austria. He remained in Vienna until the summer of 1936, when an agreement was reached which improved the relations between the two countries. He was rewarded with the title of "Ambassador Extraordinary qn a special mission."
