ESCAPE FROM CUSTODY
PRISONER IN HOSPITAL SENTENCE INCREASED [BY TELEGRAPH —I'RESS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON, Thursday A mechanic, Leslie Eric Smith, aged 24, was sentenced to an additional term of 14 days' imprisonment in the Magistrate's Court to-dav on a charge of escaping from custody. The police stated that Smith, in company with four other prisoners, "was taken to hospital for treatment and escaped. He was arrested an hour and a-half later. In evidence, Smith said he went to a friend's house to obtain money to pay a fine for the non-payment of which ho was imprisoned. Mr. A. M. Goulding, S.M., said the prison authorities would havo given him every opportunity to obtain the money.
