SOCIAL SERVICE SCHEME
Sir, —Instead of proceeding with two costly and burdensome schemes, why not defer the health scheme and proceed with the superannuation scheme alone? There is one serious anomaly in the proposed scheme. For instance, a man of 60 years of age, and eligible in every other respect, if married to a woman under 60 years, will receive only 30s per week. Many people who have resided in New Zealand for the whole period of their lives have married a second time, and in frequent cases the children of their former marriages are now eligible to become contributors to the scheme. Many of the younger generation are wondering whether the contribution of Is in the pound on wages, or salary, for a term of 40 years is a sound proposition, even if they survive to draw 30s per week. Observer.
