FREEDOM OF SPEECH

DESIRE OF GOVERNMENT ROWDYISM AT MEETINGS LABOUR PARTY'S RESOLUTION [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] Thursday Brief reference to interruptions and rowdyism at political meetings and the Government's desire for complete freedom of speech for representatives of all political parties was made at the annual conference of the New Zealand Labour Party to-night by the Minister of Education, the Hon. P. Fraser, who emphasised the importance of free speech. Mr. Fraser moved the following motion, which was carried without discussion: "That this conference reaffirms the great importance to our Parliamentary democracy of complete freedom of speech for representatives of all political parties, strongly disapproves of any interruption at political meetings, and asks all citizens to use every possible means to maintain controversial fair play for all public and political speakers." The conference concluded to-night with a motion of confidence in the Prime Minister and the Government.
