DAMAGE BY DEER
UREWERA BUSH COUNTRY EROSION ALREADY EVIDENT [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON, Wednesday "One of the official parties engaged in destroying deer lias lately been working in the picturesque Urewera bush country on the east coast, where the animals were found to be great in numbers and doing considerable damage," stated the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. W. 10. Parry, to-day! "The officers were aware that deer were numerous within the territory bounded by the Parahaki stream and the Upper Wairoa River, hut did not expect to find them in such numbers. . "One report 1 have shows that beautiful bush is badly menaced by deer," added Mr. Parry. "As the country is very steep, erosion in its early stages is already to bo seen. Splendid work is being done by the men employed, in their endeavours to arrest the menace as is shown by the frequent communications received from land owners."
