BUTTER IMPROVES

FIRM LONDON MARKET NEW ZEALAND AT 119/- CWT. RISE OF 3/6 ON WEEK Marked improvement has taken place in the London market for butter within the last few days. Latest quotations for New Zealand on a firm and active market are up to 119s per cwt., and represent a rise of approximately 3s 6d on the week. New Zealand was quoted at 118s on Tuesday, and since then prices have advanced another Is. Weakness in Danish, which last week declined steeply to the lowest" levels since June of last year, has been overcome, although the premium remains very low. Last week prices for Da.nish butter were actually lower than the quotations for Australian and New Zealand. Tho premium on Danish is now about 2s per cwt.

Cheese is quiet, although coloured has improved slightly on the week. Australian remains about the same. A Press Association message sent from London oji Thursday states that butter is firm and active. Danish is quoted at 120s to 121s per cwt.; choicest salted, Australian and New Zealand, 118s to 119s; unsalted, New Zealand, 1225; Australian, 120s to 121s. Cheese is quiet. New Zealand, white, 09s 6d; coloured, 70s; Australian; white, 67s Gd to 68s; coloured, 68s 6d.

The guaranteed price for butter is equal to 13.25 d per lb., f.0.b., and the current London quotation is equal to 14.17 d, New Zealand ports. FRUIT PRICES VARY RISE IN EGG VALUES Choice quality dessert apples were in fair demand at the City Markets yesterday, but cooking varieties were hard to sell. The demand for pears and oranges was also satisfactory, and tomatoes, which were keenly sought, realised high prices. Values for quinces and lemons were lower, but passionfruit and tree tomatoes commanded a fair inquiry. Hothouse grapes were slow of sale, there being a preference for Te Kauwhata grapes. Mushrooms were in good demand. Further supplies of oranges' from Jamaica and Callfornia will arrive before Easter, and the first Island oranges are expected in the following week. Prices for potatoes were slightly firmer, and cabbage were in heavy supply, with values lower. Celery, spinach and lettuce, which were plentiful, sold at cheaper rates. Good onions advanced slightly, and kumaras, which were in good supply, sold at prices equal to those of last week. Heavy supplies of poultry were on sale, the demand being fair.
