NURSES FOREGATHER
FAREWELL TO MATRON MISS G. HOUCHEN HONOURED TWO PRESENTATIONS MADE Tho affection and esteem felt for Miss G. Houchen, matron in charge of tlio Nurses' Residential Club and Bureau, was fully demonstrated last night when members of the Auckland branch ot the New Zealand Trained Nurses' Association and resident nurses at tho club combined to give a social evening in her honour on the eve of her retirement after '22 years' service. The function, at which there was a very large attendance of representatives of both bodies, was held at tho nurses' club in Mountain Road.
"During Miss Houchen's long term of office she has considered tho nurses in every way and carried out her many duties most efficiently, while the club's present satisfactory financial position is largely duo to her excellent management," said Miss M. Bagley, president of the Auckland branch of the Trained Nurses' Association. On behalf of the members Miss Bagley presented Miss Houchen with a navy leather hand-bag containing a substantial monetary gift.
The presentation of an upholstered easy chair and a footstool together with a cheque was made to the guest ot honour by Miss M. F. Eivers, on behalf of the resident nurses.
Miss Houchcn replied, thanking the nurses for their gifts, after which opportunity was taken to welcome the new matron, Miss B. G. Davies, Miss Bagley speaking on behalf of the association and Miss L. Evans on behalf of the resident nurses.
A brief programme was presented by Nurse Warbrick who recited and Nurse Graham who gave pianoforte solos. An interesting one-act play entitled "Anticlockwise," was presented by four sisters of the Auckland Hospital, the M isses Giliillan, Duncan, Tyler and Council.
