LARGE SCRUB FIRE
TE WHARAU NATIVE BLOCK CLEARANCE FOR SOWING [from our own correspondent] DARGAVILLE, Thursday 111 order to clear hill country under the Maori land development scheme an area of 200 acres of light scrub on the Tc Wliarau native block, between Dar» gaville and Tangowahine. was fired last evening.
The fire was soon burning fiercely over a wide area, and as darkness fell it was visible for many miles. A number of Dargaville residents were attracted to tho spot, many cars lining the roadside, from which the flames were onJ>* a few yards distant.
The lighter growth was consumed comparatively quickly, but scattered logs and stumps were still burning at an early hour this morning. The fire was patrolled by more than 20 Maoris, and no damage to the fences of other property resulted. Later the whole area will be sown in grass.
