STRUCK BY MOTOR-CYCLE

WIDOW SERIOUSLY HURT FRACTURES OF BOTH LEGS Severe shock and extensive injuries were suffered by Sirs. Ethel Annie Thornton, widow, aged 76, of Henderson Valley, when she was struck-by a, motor-cycle while crossing Coronation Bridge, just beyond Henderson on the Great North Road, at about 7.45 o'clock last night. She received compound fractures of the right and left legs and a fracture of the left arm, and she was taken to the Auckland Hospital in a serious condition. The bridge is a narrow, one-way structure, and the motor-cyclist, Sir. Sidney Leonard Stock, of Lincoln Road, Henderson, struck Mrs. Thornton in attempting to pass her as she was walking across the bridge. A second motorcyclist, Mr. Sidney Edward Jeffries, of Sunnydale, Henderson, who was following Mr. Stock, collided with the back of the first machine immediately after the accident. Mr. Jeffries suffered bruises, but the other rider and pillion passengers on both cycles were uninjured.

Dr. llhoda Robb, of Henderson, attended to Mrs. Thornton at the roadside until a St. John ambulance arrived to take her to hospital, where she immediately underwent an operation. Her condition at a late hour was reported to bo serious.
