IDDO PREVAILS

BING BOY DEFEATED LADY FURST'S CLOSE CALL COOL SMOKE LEFT AT POST [by TEI.EGRArH—OWN* CORRESPONDENT] Hastings, Thursday lavoured by a change of horseman, Iddo mado amends for his unlucky defeat at Awapuni last week by winning the Biverslea . Hurdles. After being fifjb for the first six furlongs ho moved up at the half-mile to join the pacemaker Bing Boy at the second to last fence. Outjumping Bing Boy by a couple of lengths, ho took the • lead to go on and win all out by a clear margin from the favourite, Bing Boy. Begorrah made up a deal of ground over the last five furlongs to run a creditable third. He should improve with the outing. The others had little phanee and Count Willonyx had had enough when ho fell at the last fence.

Cool Smoke was left in the Poukawa Maiden and took no part in the race. Wilful Lady, after the first half-fur-long, went to the front to try and win all the way, but over the last hundred yards weakened to run a moderate third. Bed Witch, who was sixth most of the way, camo with a strong run to win well. Fitz James, after being well away, drifted early to come strongly at the finish and beat Wilful Lady for second on the post. Hunting Mint was disappointed twice in the running, so that sho may improve on her fourth. The others, except Sunny Lass, never looked dangerous. A Decisive Victory

Majority scored very decisively in the Autumn Handicap. After running fifth for most of the way, _ he soon settled the opposition when given his head at the distance. Quake, always in the picture, had every chance, but was lucky to beat Okawa for second. Haile Selassie tried to win all the way and ran a creditablo race for fourth. Ridden more patiently, he may have been closer. The others did not impress. Black Frost was last all the way. The Hawke's Bay Cup provided- one of the best finishes ever seen on the Hastings track, nine of the eleven runners passing the winning post in close order. Ned Cuttlo was allowed plenty of time to get on his feet, and. after being ridden a perfect race by W. J. Broughtou, who never covered an inch of ground more than ho should, won narrowly. Ned Cuttle got a clear run on the rails at the finish, but deserved his success. Tiger Gain made a good showing for second and Master Cyklon was third. Roaming was fourth, with several of the others almost in line. Soho was last, having got tho worst of the start. Sergia did not perform as well as expected and was just in front of Soho at the finish Promising Juveniles

Very soon after the start of the Nursery Handicap it-could be seen that, there were only going to be two in it, Lady Furst and Ecstatic, the latter Assuming command when the field settled down. Ecstatic and Lady Furst both ran "green" in the straight, and Lady Furst, all out, just won. Laughing Song, who came from a long way back, gained third. Night Attack, Coronation and Morning Light are promising, as also is Royal Hunting, who was fourth. However, they are backward but may improve .quickly. . Gran vale won the Heretaunga Handicap in a most convincing manner, after being in a handy position all the way. When it came to the run home he finished too strongly for the others to enjoy the easiest win of the day. lhala, who recently ran a track record lor a hack, was never further back than second, but had little chance with the winner from the distance. Maliutai ran a much improved race and may be dangerous in his next start. Soy fried, never near the leaders, ran much below expectations and his Trentham form. Tapurau was in the middle of a strung out field all the way, besides being wide out over the last three furlongs, so that she may improve also. Trailer was in the .rear most of the journey. Minnow, after being in front for about six furlongs faded out. Defeat o! Lady Ina

Peter Beck ford, always li.-m'cly, won well in the Havelook Flying Handicap, from Lady l'na, who was forced to carry her weight all the way. She may have done better if she had not been made so much use of. Black Thread should improve with the race, although he appeared to be a little sore before the start. Outside the placed horses nothing impressed, although Aiwai may improve with the race.
