OPENING OF SEASON
PRELIMINARY CONTESTS MATCHES AT CARLAW PARK Keen interest is boing taken in the opening of the Auckland Rugby Leaguo's season at Carlaw Park tomorrow. For some weeks past club teams liavo been training hard and there is every indication that tho competition will prove highly exciting.
The appearance oi Papakura, a new club with senior affiliation, will give tho grado added interest. Although the season is to be started early, to-morrow's matches are a preliminary to the championship competition, which will open to-morrow week. In the principal game to-morrow Richmond last vear's champions, will play Mount Albert on tlio No. 1 ground, anil a good game should rosult. Richmond play fast, open football, while Mount Albert is reported to bo a vastly improved team and one of the fittest for an early start. Tho gamo between Manukau and Ponsonby is sure to prove a good attraction us a curtain-miser. Much is expected of Manukau, which is said to have the heaviest pack seen in Auckland for many years. I onsonby, however, may cause a surprise, as its backs combine well. „ _ . _ . Marist, winners of the Roope Rooster and champion of champions competition last Beasoon, will play Papakura, and the Bf 1 "® should be a good test for the new country team. City will meet Newton in the curtain raiser on the No. 2 ground.
