JEWS' PLACE IN WORLD
PERSECUTION AND HOPES An address on "Tho Placo of the Jews in tho World" was given by tho Rev. A. Astor, rabbi of the Auckland Jewish congregation, at tho weekly luncheon meeting yesterday of the Y.M.C.A. Optimists' Club. Tho president, Mr. A. T. Dow, presided. Mr. Astor recalled Einstein's saying that the treatment of the Jew was "tho barometer of civilisation " The fear that the Jews might become too great seemed to bo the cause of their persecution in Germany and elsowhere, but they comprised less than 1 per cent of tho population of Germany and could not hope to dominate it. Mr. Astor expressed his belief that a new era for the Jews was commencing with tho return of many to Palestine. "Young men and women aro giving up the prospect of great careers and are going to do pioneering work in the Holy Land," Mr. Astor said. "Many Jewish peoplo hope that ono day Palestine may bo a Dominion within tho British Commonwealth of Nations."
