ST. MATTHEW'S BELLS
RENOVATIONS PLANNED The bells of St. Matthew's Church, which have not been rung in peals for more than 20 years, may be heard again in the near future after renovations to the belfry have been carried out. The bells were brought to Auckland in 1863 by the ship Nimrod, and were presented to Bishop Sehvyn. r J lie largest weighs nearly a ton and the smallest four hundredweight. Visitors to Auckland have often expressed regret that the. bells were not pealed, and about four years ago the vestry was approached to have the belfry put in order so that they might ring again. At that time, however, the church was not in a position to carry out the necessary alterations, but the matter is now in hand. To attract public interest in this form of church music a demonstration of boll ringing with hands bells is to be given at the annual meeting of St. Matthew's 011 April 2G. For the past 20 years the bells have been merely chimed, being lixed in position and the clappers only being moved. This does not give the fullness of tone and volume obtained with the peal.
