WATER SUPPLY
TE KUITI PROPOSALS - * REPORTS BY ENGINEERS WAITETE CATCHMENT SURVEY [ry telegraph—own con respondent] TE KUITI, Wednesday When the Te Kuiti'water committee resumed its sitting in Te Kuiti to-day reports from civil engineers were presented to it.
One report was from Mr. H. Yickerman, of Yickerman and Lancaster, and advocated tho retention of the present source of supply at Waitete owing to the financial savings that would result; tho second report was from Mr. I!. I'. Worley, and. advocated tbe scrapping of the Waitete source, as the annual costs involved in the Mangaokawa pumping scheme would be loss than those involved in bringing tho Waitete scheme up to the required standard; the third report, by the district engineer of the Public Works Department, Mr. L. May, urged the adoption of the Waitete scheme, providing that a survey now being made of the catchment area showed it to he of sufficient to meet the water demands.
Mr. Vickerman endorsed the scheme of .the Te Kuiti borough engineer, Mr. B. J. Drake, saying that the whole of it was necessary, and that, if under, taken, it would result in a great improvement, and, except possibly at the highest levels, should ensure general satisfaction.
Mr. H. T. Morton, representing those opposed to the council's proposals, said there was no time worse than the present for the borough to undertake such a gigantic scheme as was proposed. He, therefore, suggested attending to the reticulation only, leaving the balance of the M'ork over for future years.
Mr J. M. Hine, for the borough council, said the main pipeline might have a very short life and it was essential that the whole scheme, now estimated to cost £325,000 in all, should be continued. *
llie committee adjourned to permit the result of the Waitete catchment survey to be presented.
PIAKO COUNTY SCHEME SUGGESTIONS FOR COUNCIL [BY TELEGRAPH' —OWN CORRESPONDENT] TE AROHA, Wednesday As the result of a suggestion by Mr. H. M. Corbett, of Te Aroha, a scheme for, supplying water to 36,000 acres of that part of the Piako county surrounding Te Aroha was put forward by the county engineer, Mr. B. H. Horner, at the monthly meeting of the council. Afr. Horner suggests tapping the Waiorongomai Stream, which originates in a bush-clad and fully-protected area, conveying the water to Te Aroha by a lOin. main, and thence implementing a system of pipes taking the water through the Otwat, Springdale, Waitoa. Ngarua and Te, Aroha West districts. All enclosed roads, will he served by connecting systems from this outer circuit of mains. An Sin. main will be taken to Waihou. and thence to Wa itoa along the main highway.
The amount of water to serve this district has been estimated by Air. Horner as 400.000 gallons a dav. including a connection with the Te Aroha borough and the Waihou. Waitoa and Te Aroha West dairv factories. The engineer said he was satisfied that the Waiorongomai Stream could supply this amount of water at all times. The estimated length of the pipeline, would be To miles, and the scheme would cost £75,Q50.
Members of the council agreed that the scheme was an excellent one, which would have to be considered in the near future.
The council decided to go into the question and recommended that the incoming council should investigate the scheme. *
