PAYMENT OF RATES
HAURAKI PLAINS COUNTY TARDY CROWN TENANTS [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT"!! NGATEA, Wednesday Jn reporting a fairly good rate collection over the Hauraki Plains County, the clerk, Mr. E. A. Mahonev, stated to the meeting of the council to-day that while it was a little early to give a full report, more than 100 per cent of the amount levied had been paid, but this included arrears which amounted to over £SOOO. The chairman, Mr. C. W. Parfitt, said ho was rather disappointed in the collection so far. The council had difficulty in obtaining rates from Crown tenants, and efforts should be made to get the Government to enforce payment, of rates by its tenants. ' JII reply to a question the clerk said he hoped to get £21,000 out of £24,000 of this year's rates. The remaining, £.3000 was spread over a few ratepayers in each riding. The total arrears of recent years' rates amounted to £7OOO, most of which was coming in graduallv. The clerk brought down his estimates for next year, showing expenditure expected to reach £12,510. Recepits and subsidies were estimated to be £27,000, leaving £15.5:5:1, which would be covered by a rate of 3Jd.
