MANY HOSPITAL PATIENTS COST OF ADMINISTRATION [by telegraph—press association] DUXEDIN, Wednesday The fact that New Zealand's statistics gave no reason for complacency was pointed out by Mr. J. W. Mawson. Government Town Planning officer, of Wellington, when speaking last evening to members and associates of the New Zealand branch of the Royal Sanitary Institute how in conference at Dunedin. "There are 1435 medical practitioners registered in New Zealand, one to every 1096 persons—the highest ratio in the world, 1 believe," said Mr. Mawson. "In the last full year for which statistics are available there were 101,021 in-patients in public hospitals, equal to 6.4 of the population, and 118,256 out-patients, equal to 7.5 of the population, a total of 13.9 per cent, excluding numbers cared for in privato hospitals. "The total cost of administration of public hospitals for 1936, excluding charitable aid, was £1,341,000. Durine the same year the total number of mental patients under oversight, care or control was 9227, of whom 7860 were housed in mental institutions at a cost of £524,310."
