FRENCH CRUISER
OFFICERS ENTERTAINED RECEPTION AND DANCE CLUB AND LEAGUE COMBINE The commander of the French cruiser Jeanne d'Arc, and his officers were entertained at a reception and dance in the Lewis Eadv Hall last night, given by the presidents and committees of the Navy League and the Auckland French Club. The hall was hung with flags of the Empire, while graceful palms were arranged in various corners. On arrival Captain Paul Auphan and the officers were received by Mr. J. H. Frater, chairman of tho Navy League, and Mr. G. S. Coldham, president of the French Club. They were assisted by their wives, Mrs. Frater wearing a frock of black, white and rose figured crepe suede and Mrs. Coldham a frock of bicester blue crepe embroidered with sequins. Among those present were: —Lady Davis, who was in a frock of ice blua crepe threaded with silver; Madame G. Pouquet, black lace trimmed with red; Madame E. Meyer, black Chantilly lace; Mrs. H. Tiarks, grey and mauve chiffon; Mrs. F. H. Gifford, bottle green lace trimmed with flame flowers; Mrs. G. N. Loriston Clark, gold lame; Mrs. C. B. Tirilev, green and white floral chiffon; Mrs. Webber, black taffetas; Mrs. H. 0. Wiles, figured green and black chiffon; Mrs. Philip Hall, black lace; Mrs. W. N. Mel). CADETS ENTERTAINED MERCANTI LE AUXILIARY Members of the Mercantile Auxiliary Club held a most enjoyable dance on Monday night for the cadets of the French cruiser, Jeanne D'Arc. The function was held in the Overseas Club rooms which were attractively arranged with native fern and seasonal flowers, while large bowls of vivid golden acacia blossom added a further note of gay colour. 'J ho guests were received by the vicepresident, Mrs. E. L. Burton, who was wearing a frock of parchment angolskin lace, and by the secretary. Miss Joyce Dickoj', who was in peacockblue taffetas Proceedings opened with the singing of the National Anthem, followed by the Marseillaise. Musical items were given by Miss dean Reynolds and elocutionary numbers by Miss Mary Pilkington, while several items were also given by the visitors. Thanks were expressed during the evening to Mr. C. Maire, of Takapuna, who conducted the' visitors to the club rooms and remained to act as interpreter.
