ANXIOUS NIGHT
TOLAGA BAV TOWNSHIP NATIVE HOUSES INUNDATED FAMILY WADES TO SAFETY [by telegraph —OWN correspondent] GISBORXE, Saturday Tremendous falls of rain occurred at Tolaga Bay, bringing all the rivers and streams down in high flood and causing alarm for the safety of the people, houses and stock. The climax of the damage occurred this morning, when a span of the old Uawa River Bridge collapsed and isolated the township for a time. The majority of the residents were abroad most of the night, either endeavouring to safeguard their own property or to assist others. Several houses were threatened by slips from the hills behind them. One house was filled with clay from a slip. The houses of the native settlement at Mangatuna, usually well above flood level, were two or three feet deep in water all through the night. One family had to wade to safety through th« swiftly-moving water that reached to the armpits of the adults. The rainfall records of past yeart were exceeded when 7.62iu. was registered for the 24 hours. At 7.30 a.m. all the low-level bridges in the neighbourhood were completely out of sight.
