NUTRITION SURVEY
INADEQUATE DIETARY. PROTECTIVE FOODS LACKING The statement that the average family dietary was deficient in the protective foods, such as milk, eggs, fresh fruit and vegetables, made by Miss Irene Glasson, in her address on the Commonwealth Government's nutrition survey to the Y.W.C.A. public affairs group has been endorsed by Professor A. Amies, who was a member of the committee appointed to supervise the collection of records lor the survey in Victoria, states a Melbourne writer. "We eat too much meat and carbohydrates, and too little milk and vegetables," Professor Amies said, adding -that fresh fruit and vegetables, and particularly milk, which was rich in calcium and vitamins, were not only vital to the general health, , but important for the building of healthy teeth. He agreed with Miss Glasson that ignorance was to an extent a factor in diet deficiencies. "We have," j he said, "a truism at the Dental College that it ia not the people who can afford the best food who have the best teeth and the best health." The City Health Officer (Dr. John Dale), who was also a member of the Victorian committee for the survey, stressed the value of the survey and expressed the view that it would prove of particular interest in showing to what extent lack of knowledge might be a factor in diet deficiencies. Undoubtedly there were very many families who, through poverty, were unable to procure an adequate diet.
