SMART SPRINTS

GOOD FIVE FURLONGS EFFORT BY LAND GIRL KENA RUNS SIX IN 1.16 1-5 After an pprly shower the weather wag fine for training operations at Ellerslie yesterday. The No. 2 grass track, which was fast, and the tan were used for all the strong work. Good sprints were recorded by Land Girl and Sir Abb and Kena went pleasingly over six furlongs. On the grass an Illumination gelding ran six furlongs at about 15s to the furlong. Psychologist was hard ridden to run half a mile in 545. The Romney—Thurnley gelding (Gilchrist) ran five furlongs in 1.3 2-5, the last half-mile in 51 l-ss. For a novice his latest work has been encouraging. Land Girl (R. Fearn) cleared out from Aero Queen (P. Fearn) at the end of five furlongs in 1.2 3-5, running the last three in 38s. Land Girl, who will race next at Rotorua, did her work in free style. Half-mile by Sir Abb An unnamed filly by The Ace (R. Fearn), after running the first two in 25 3-ss, was slowing up a little to complete six furlongs in 1.21 4-ss. She has done well considering the brief period she has been in work, ■> Sir Abb (Wiggins) was kicked right out to run half- a mile in 495. He is showing improved condition after recent racing and is to competo at Matamata to-morrow. Neil (iVletcalfiiO ran a round in 1.51. He is not showing much brilliance in his work, but is a good plodder who may do further service as a jumper. Master Appellant (Kerr) and' Bright Idea (Stokes)' were not ridden out to run five furlongs in 1.8 3-5, after taking 25 4-5s for the first two. Master .Appel-' lant has improved in condition during the past few weeks. Kena (Gifchrist) was accompanied by Simint (Ritchie) over the last half-milo of six furlongs and finished in front in 1.16 1-5, the lafet half-mile in 50 l-ss. Kena did his work particularly well. Simint Showed good speed for a jumper. Ringshot (Green) was doing slightly better than School Song (Gilchrist) at the end of five furlough in 1.4, after taking 25 2-5s for the first two. Ringshot is in excellent condition and looks better for his Takapuna racing. Work on the Tan On the tan Tybalt (Gilchrist) ran six furlongs in 1.22 2-5. He is an acceptor in the Matamata Cup, but may not make the trip unless further rain falls. He has done his latest work "in good style. Valmint (Murray) ran six furlongs easily in 1.26 2-5. Ohmaha (Murray) went half a mile in 53 4-ss. W. Fergus' charges are in good healthy condition and should come to hand quickly with a little fast work. Bronze Emerald, First Gold, Money, Jack Tar, Kilonsa, Englishman. Mundane, Trfivace, Billy Boy, Surella and Glen Abb were among those to do useful tasks.

TAKANINI HORSES SCHOOLING OF JUMPERS Mf A AGREA DISPLAYS DASH - ■- BOUT WITH GOLDEN" SPAHI Some interesting schooling was witnessed at Takanini yesterday when tho Matamata candidates Mia Acrea (Walters) and Golden Spahi (McIlrov) gave an improved display over four flights of hurdles. The horses went into their fences with plenty of dash and finished up by running a round in 1.57 3-5, the last three furlongs over one fence in 48 4-ss. Feldberg (Walters) and Flash By (Mcllroy) gave a first-class exhibition of jumping for beginners. Feldberg who lias had a little more experience than Flash By, went the slightly better, but both went in very promising style. Tho Hunting Song two-year-old, Nordic Song, has made a reappearance after several months' spell. He has not grown a groat deal, but has been well cared for. while away from Takanini and should come to hand quickly. Like others of his sire's stock, Nordic Song has speed and may show improvement when the tracks become easier later in the season. Principal Winners With the exception of the improving Hot Box, none of the Takanini horses wero victorious at tho recent Takapuna meeting. However, the horses trained at Takanini have already won more this season than in the preceding two years. Tho horses who have won over £3OO this season are:—Round Up, £1605; Hot Box, £970; Palustro, j £830; Inver, £795; Valamito, £635; Grateful, £575; Arvakur, £500: Parquet, £375; Bachelor King, £365; and Anion, £345, ' Auion, who did well in his early engagements this season, has been disappointing lately. In his two starts at tho recent Takapuna meeting, Anion did not show tho dash: usually displayed by him in the first furlong of his raccsj even though ho looks well _ Round Up has proved a very profitable investment for. Mr. T. lmpev since he was purchased a little over 12 months ago. Tho two-year-old Arvakur, who carries the same colours, has also done well. At present he has contested only a few races, and the Wellington Stakes has been his only unplaced performance. Condition of Tlood Tide Hard racing seems to get to tho bottom of Invert but ho freshens up quickly and his total is*very creditable. He should extend his record before the close of the season. Seeing that Palustre was only out of maiden class, she has done remarkably well to have won £B3O. She is a smart sprinter likely to win more money as the season advances Anagram, a bay gelding by Little England from Miss Leslie, is tho latest to join tho jumping brigade at Takanini. P. E. Pope has added to his team a three-year-old filly hv Bronze Eagle from a sister to Hot Box. Flood Tide, who has been on tho easy list since his return from Melbourne, is in very healthy condition to resume work. His younger sister. Miss Lovelock, will not bo perservered with for the time being, but will be brought in during the winter to be tried again as a four-year-old.
