FAST GALLOPS

TWO-YEAR-OLDS SHINE MILE BY STUDLEY ROYAL FINACIERE BEATS OWLSGLEAM [by TELECHAPH OWN correspondent] CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday Ideal conditions prevailed for the final gallops at Riccarton to-day. The outside of the course proper provided fast going and the plough was used by some of the early gallopers. On the plough, Paper Slipper, joined by Wild Chase at the five-furlong post, ran six furlongs well in 1.16 3-5, the second three in 38 2-ss. Wild Chase looks bright again and has apparently thrown off the soreness that troubled him at Treutham. Lazybones and Mulatto finished together over five furlongs in 1.4 4-5. Great Memory and Great Bramble did an easy seven furlongs in 1.37. Defaulter and Yale were companions in a working gallop over six furlongs in 1.19 4-5. Sovereign Lady and Rousseau raced abreast throughout a mile in 1.47 2-5. Contract easily beat Oriental King over half a mile' in 535. On the grass, Guinea Fowl strode over seven furlongs in 1.30 1-5. Scuffle ran half a mile along the back in 525. Speed Over Five Furlongs Financiere finished about four lengths in front of Owlsgleam at the end of five furlongs in 1.2 13-5, the last four in 50s. The former has only to move off the mark to be dangerous on Saturday. Flame Queen, a new inmate of'y S. Barr's stable, recorded similar figures. Other tasks over five furlongs were oxecuted by Night Calm, in 1.3 4-5; Nightdress and Liberate, in 1.5. The best half-mile sprint was credited to Raeburn and Kilrobe, who crossed the lino abreast in 48 2-ss. Later, this time was equalled by Density, by Pink Coat—Denise, who had a slight advantage from Night Hawk, by Nightinarch —Velocium, and Gold Trek, by Nightmarch —Rainbow Gold. Glenogil was in front of Clubman at the end of half a mile in 48 3-6s. They were accompanied by the four-year-old grey gelding by Straightcourse from Yollownammer, who shows marked promise. Lovo Affair ran half a mile in 50s. Pucelle beat Romarin and Chanteur in 50 3-ss. Netherlea and Dunstan recorded 19 2-ss. Good Passage, assisted by Gaoler, ran the same distance in 49 3-ss. Stratosphere, Superex and Bellerive covered six furlongs in 1.18, and their stable-mates, Top Row and Double Gift, were given easy work. Windward was alway in front of Nolana over six furlongs in 1.18, Dracula following in 1.18 2-5. Davolo and Rotokino strode over the same ground irt 1.21. Swordstick in Solid Condition Swordstick was a. neck in front of Dictate, with Happy Night a length away at the end of seven furlongs in 1.29 3-5, the last four taking ols. Swordstick is in much more solid condition since his spell and should be useful later. Sparkle went over the same distance in 1.31; Rabble outstayed Dividend in 1.32, while Bright Prospect attracted attention by beating Drink Up in 1.30 l-ss. Studley Royal, assisted for five furlongs by Epliod, galloped a mile in 1.44, the first half in 50 3-5. Gas Mask and Top Rank ran a mile in 1.47. Royal Amphora jumped four brush hurdles at a fair pace. Tomcat also jumped four hurdles with Nocturnus as a mate. This was Nocturnus' first schooling since last August. Conception also jumped four hurdles. An interesting daily visitor to the tracks is a two-year-old colt by Nightmarch from Gay Sonnet, owned by his breeder, Mr. F. T. Buchanan, RoHeston. He is of the solid typo and is a very free mover. RIDING ENGAGEMENTS JOCKEYS FOR MATAMATA Riding engagements for the Matamata Racing Club's meeting to-morrow are as follows: — G. IMPROVING TWO-YEAR-OLD GOOD FORM OF HOT BOX The two-year-old Hot Box, who was unlucky not to win both his traces at the recent Takapuna meeting at Ellerslie, has been steadily improving since lie began racing, and, although he could not gain a place in the Great Northern Foal Stakes, has done well in winning tln;eo races. Hot Box is an upstanding bay colt by Cape HoTn' from Iscbnll, by Valkyrian from the imported mare Pebblo 11,, by Rock Flint from Petual, by Chittabob from St. Perpetua, by St. Simon from Paraguay, by Foxhall, and has shown more early brilliance than the majority of tho stock of his sire. Hot Box's breeding suggests possibilities as a stayer when he matures.
