Noted French Woman Musician
PHILHARMONIC CONCERT Mile. Nadia Boulanger, the wellknown French musician, conducted the Royal Philharmonic Society concert last month, this being the first time in the 124 years history of the Society that a woman had conducted one of its concerts. Mile. Boulanger conducted a performance of the Requiem Mass by Faure, the anniversary of whose death fell on the day of the concert. "1 learned my music under Faure himself when 1 was small, and have always studied and loved his works," Mile. Boulanger said in an interview. "Among others who studied under him at the same time as I did was France's great composer, Havel." Known throughout the world, Mile. Boulanger is one of the leading teachers in Paris, where she has taught for 34 years. Her pupils include Poulenc, Igor Markievitch, Lennox Berkeley and Virgil Thompson.
