Interest of Churches
PLAYS BY NOTED WRITERS In many parishes throughout England, but particularly in the. London area, Nativity and Mystery plays were produced as a definite part of the Christmas activities of the churches. Thousands of young people were engaged in the acting of these plays, and, guided by the clergy and by experienced directors, a school of religious drama and acting is gradually being created. The Religious Drama Society, which advises on tho selection and production of church plays, has now 40 affiliated groups, and has built up a library of more than 200 printed plays, almost all of them specially written for performance in churches. Among them are several by John Masefield (the Poet Laureate), Laurence Housman, Miles Malleson, Sheila Kayo Smith, Cecily Hamilton, and Lady Gregory. While tho use of religious plays in English churches is steadily extending the demand for films is developing even more rapidly. It is estimated that already in moro than 1000 churches films are given a definite placo in religious and educational work.
