STATE HOUSES

PROGRESS AT WHANGAREI 12 HOMES BEING BUILT [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] WHANGAREI, Thursday Good progress is being made by the contractor, Mr. Alf. Walker, of Whangarei, with the construction of the 12 houses under the State scheme. At present they are in all stages of construction, but it is expected that by the end of February they will be ready for occupation. Seven of the houses are of brick, while five have wood weatherboards. All have tiled roofs. They are of four, five and six rooms. No two are alike in the outside appearance. The Public Works Department is engaged constructing the roads and paths necessary for the subdivision and in the laying of the water and sewerage mains. When the area was purchased by the Government there were a number of fine trees growing and in the laying out of the block care was taken to leave as many trees as possible standing.
