RAILWAY WORKSHOPS
CONDITIONS AT OTAHUHU MINISTER TO PAY VISIT A special visit will be paid by the Minister of Railways, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, to the Otahuhu railway workshops on Monday, according to advice received by Mr. C. R. Petrie, M.P. for Hauraki. The Minister is making his trip from the south by railcar and is expected to arrive at the workshops at 2.45 p.m. He will leave again at 4.30. In view of the limited time at his disposal he will not receive any deputations.
The visit is being made for the express purpose of discussing with the workshops' employees matters concerning working conditions, especially in regard to grading and remuneration in certain classes of employment. Representations were made to the Minister by the member for the district, Mr. Petrie, who suggested that the matters causing concern among the 1500 men engaged at the workshops should be discussed at a mass meeting of the employees during working hours. On the Minister's arrival the men will cease work and be addressed by the Minister.
