RACING AT MASTERTON HIGH. JUMPER CLEARS 6FT. WELLINGTON COACH'S SPRINT [BY TELEGRAPH —I'RESS ASSOCIATION] MASTERTON, Sundny Considerable iuterest attached to the appearance of members of the lrinidad Empire Games team at the Masterton amateur athletic sports meeting yesterday. Noel Stanford, off the 10yds. mark, won the 440 yds. in 50 l-5s after a great tussle with the local runner, J. Eastwood (syds), the two competitors almost breasting the tape together. The sprint crack, J. R. N. Cumberbatch, who started from scratch, deadheated with Hedge (BJyds) for second place in the 100 yds. handicap, which was won by the Pahiatua competitor 15. Murch, off Byds. Cumberbatch, who was feeling the effects of travelling, also started in the 220 yds, but was unplaced.

John R. Aslimead, who was ill on the journey over the Rimutakas, did not compete, but gavo an exhibition of high and long jumping. In the high jump he cleared 6ft., which has been accomplished by only three New Zealauders. In the long jump he rovered 21ft. 4 in.

The manager of the team, Mr. M. 8. L. Joseph, a good all-round athlete, was a starter in the 100 yds and 120 yds events, but was unplaced. A. Fitch, American coach at preseiit under contract to the Wellington Centre, made an attempt on the 130 yds world's record. He was paced by a cyclist, who, however, was of little assistance. He covered the distance in 13 1-1 Os, five-tenths of a second short of the record. R. P. Barrer, of Dannevirke. won the mile event for the Hall Cup in 4m 245. The Fcilding cyclist A. H. Allen scooped the pool in the cycling events, winning the half-mile in 635, the mile in 2m 14 l-ss, two miles in 4m 38 l-ss, and the three miles in 7m 50 4-ss. The conditions were ideal. WAIPA'S ANNUAL STEEPLECHASE To gain fastest time and establish a new course record was the feat accomplished by S. J. McGivern in the Waipa steeplechaso of 6y, miles, held at Pokuru. The winner ran a well-judged race from scratch, and at the six-mile peg had overtaken tho leaders. Ho then went on to win in 59 57s and gain his third success in (he event.
