Jan. 10 r -j. The Washington correspondent of ' the New York Herald Tribune says a drought similar to that of 1934-36, which rendered barren large sections bf fertile land and cost the fanners ' thousands of millions of dollars, is again spreading over the great plains from Texas toward Canada. It is threatening the winter wheat in some areas and lias already killod "'the crops in others, whero tho expected precipitation of snow and rain did not occur. These sections, which need an abnormal amount of moisture, are being abandoned. in tho heart of the wheat area are very dry. Farmers are carrying water for drinking and livestock ... purposes. ..Unusually early dust storms are adding to the suffering over a wide area, covering much of the central and southern parts of the great plains and extending eastward to the Mississippi and westward to the Rocky Mountains. ■ ~ It is feared the Department of Agriculture may be compelled to abandon crop control and encourage the further planting of wheat and maize.
