CAR SMASHES WINDOW
PAKKED ON A SLOPE QUEEN STREET EXCITEMENT DAMAGE ESTIMATED AT £75 Damage estimated at £75 was done by a motor-car which crashed into a large plate-glass window on the premises of Greig and Esterman, furnishers, 424 Queen Street, about 2.45 yesterday afternoon. The car had been left by the driver, Paymaster Lieuten-ant-Commander J. K. Higbton. of 2 Clifton Road, Takapuna, parked above the Unity Hall, and the unoccupied vehicle moved off, running diagonally across' Queen Street. It mounted the footpath, missing a telegraph pole by a very small margin. The right front wheel of the car crashed into the window, half of which was knocked out. and fragments of glass, some of them of considerable size, were scattered along the pavement for about 20 yards. The window, which was eight feet high and more than 15ft. long, was valued at £SO, being insured with the South British Company. Further damage was done to the frame and various articles of furniture on display in the window, these being scratched by flying glass. Neither the frame nor the furniture was covered by insurance.
Damage to the car was confined to the buckling of the mudguard and the parking light on the right side of the car. The vehicle was unable to back out of the window under its own power and the assistance of two policemen was required to move it. The large crowd of spectators was provided with an unexpected thrill when the car, in backing out, knocked out the remaining half of the window.
