The condition of four of them is described as serious. The fire apparently had been smouldering for some time. Firemen using gas masks descended into the smoke-filled basement, the conditions in which were made worse by escaping gas and several feet of water. Some of the men collapsed immediately and were carried out by their comrades, who showed remarkable heroism. Air conditioning apparatus waE used for the first time and helped the brigades in mastering the fire, which at one stage threatened a block of big stores in the vicinity. The damage is estimated at £IO,OOO.
