MAILS BY AIR

IMPERIAL SERVICES BIG INCREASE IN LOADS CHEAP POSTAGE RATE REMARKABLE SUCCESS By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Times Cable LONDON, Jan. 11 The aeronautical correspondent of the Times, discussing the introduction of air mail postage between Britain and Malaya on February 23, and the extension to Australia later, says: "In the six months since the introduction of the l*d rate on the South African route, the weekly mail loads have grown 10 times as heavy as under the surcharge system. "The flying-boat route between Britain and Singapore is now prepared and sufficient Empire flying-boats &ave been delivered to operate an extra service. "Imperial Airways' weekly mail loads to India and Malaya are about 36001b., and other first-class mail 20,0001b. weekly. By the evidence of the African mails it may be assumed that the whole of that additional load will be carried by air liners after February 23. " Sweeping changes in the operational scheme will be required. Instead of the present bi-weekly services from Britain and India, there must be four operated by Empire flying-boats in order to absorb the big mail loads."
