WORKER FRACTURES HIP ACCIDENT AT WHAKATANE [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] WHAKATANE, Monday Athletic training, which enabled him to straighten up as he fell and avoid a headlong plunge to a concrete floor 32ft. belpw, probably saved the life of Mr. Michael Hay ward, who received a serious fracture of the hip when he fell through a roof at the Whakatnne Paper Mill construction job. Mr. Hay ward was pulling a tarpaulin over one of the partly built sections and overbalanced when the tarpaulin came toward him more easily than he had expected. Stepping back, he crashed through an asbestos ceiling. He twisted and turned as he fell and struck the ground 011 his left hip and side. He was taken to the Whakatane Hospital.
