TWO FURTHER RACES

WELLINGTON AND TAURANGA v AUCKLANDERS HIT REEF [by telegraph—own correspondent] PLIMMERTON, Tuesday The annual contest for the Cornwell Cup was continued to-day, when the third and fourth races were sailed. Tho morning race resulted in a win for Wellington by lm 49s from Tauranga, with Paremata third and Plimmerton fourth. A further race held in the afternoon was won by Tauranga by lm 37s from Paremata, Wellington being third and Auckland fourth. Both races were delayed half an hour to allow of minor repairs to two boats. The results were:— Third Race. —Wellington (Valeta), K. Stutter and B. Jukes, 1; Tauranga (Rascal), B. Sneddon and L. Stevens, 2; Paremata (Nukumai), M. Coleman and A. S. Fisher, 3. Fourth Race. —Tauranga (Valeta), B. Sneddon and Ij. Stevens, 1; Paremata (Oi), M. Coleman and A. S. Fisher, 2; Wellington (Rascal), K. Stutter aud*B. Jukes, 3. The morning; riico was started nt 10.10 a.m. and was sailed over three rounds of a windward and leeward course. The weather was misty with light rain and a light breeze, which freshened considerably in the afternoon. Before tho start Auckland hit a reef and damaged the centre-plate, but carried on. From , a pretty start Tauranga showed the way over the lino to Wanganui, which was closely followed by Manukau, Suva, Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Paremata and Plimmerton, with Otago last. The boats were bunched on a narrow lead to the first mark in Maori Bay. Suva was blocked when rounding the buoy and lost valuable seconds. On the run down the first time round the order of the leading boats was:—Tauranga, Wellington, Paremata, Manukau and Otago. Wellington ran to the. front soon after spinnakers were set. Auckland was a long way back. At this stage the Wellington boat

was sailing exceptionally well, and established n comfortable lead from Tauranga and Paremata on the beat up to the starting line, while Auckland started to move up. In the second round the Wellington boys 'were very slow with their spinnaker, but still held a good lead, with Paremata and Tauranga next. Passing the clubhouse at the completion of the second round the times were:—Wellington, llh 7m 28s; Paremata. 13U 9m ss: Tauranga, 11m Dm 245; Plimmerton, llh 12m 2s; Auckland, llh 13m oos; Manu■ kau, llh 15m • 22»; Otago, llh l<m _.»s, Christchurch, llh 19m 50s; Wanganui, llh 21ni 15s; Suva, llh 22m 255. The only change in the positions of the leading boats occurred .on the beat »P to the finishing lino, when Tauranga replaced Paremata for second place. Suva capsized when gybing around the last mark. The -finishing times were: —Wellington, llh 39m 345; Jauranga, llh 41m 235; Paremata, llh 41m 58s; Plimmerton, llh 42ra 40s; Auckland, llh 44m -28s; llh . SOm; Manukau, llh 51m 325; Christchurch, llh 54m o4s, Wanganui, llh 59m Os. The start of the afternoon race at 3.10 "p m., over three rounds of a triangular course, saw practically the whole fleet cross the line together, Wellington Just heading Manukau, Auckland, Paremata, Christchurch, lauranga, Plimmerton, Suva and Wellington in close order. Otago broke a shroud and did not start. On the lead up to Maori Bay Tauranga went to the front, and rounded the mark first. When spinnakers were set for the run Plimmerton, planing very fast, ran through to second place from well back. On the completion of the first round the order or the leading boats was:-~Tauranga, Wellington. Plimmerton, Paremata, with Auckland and Manukau next. Paremata was sailing well and replaced Plimmerton in third place. Apart from this the order in the second round remained the same. On the completion of the second round the times were:—Tauranga, 3h 40 m ss; Wellington, 3h 41m 12s; Paremata, 3h 41m 245; Plimmerton, 3h 42m; Auckland, ah 4_m 129 Manukau, 3h 43m 235; Christchurch, ! 3h 44m 8s; Suva, 3h 44m 475; Wanganui, 3h 45m Tauranga, sailing beautifully, gained over a ! minute on •tho-lßst* round and scored a convincing win, and Paremata improved her position to second. The finishing times were:—Tauranga. 3h 52m 13s; Paremata 3h's3m 50s; Wellington, 3h 54m; Auckland, oom 13s; Plimmerton, 3h 55m 255; 57m 30s; Christchurch, 4h Om 58s; \\ anganui. 4h 1m; Suva, 4h 3in 40s. If possible, three races .will be sailed tomorrow, the first startinpr at 9.30 a.m. races have now been sailed in the contest, and the centres with wins to their credit aro Auckland, Paremata, Wellington and lauranga.
