Monday Bullets from a small bore rifle cot. the 6000-volt cable supplying Waimairi I County with electricity last night, and left consumers without power and light for between two and three hours. The death-charged cable, severed | near an insulator, fell on to a gom fence, and when linesmen sent out to find the break arrived on the seen# about nine o'clock they located the cable by a stream of crackling blue sparks leaping from the wire on the wet hedge. Power was cut off at-a ; near by switch box and temporary -repairs were made. The br< 3 a k occurred about seven o'clock and power was restored hj? tea o'clock. Permanent repairs were effected to-day. 1 The incident recalls discussion at a I recent meeting of the County Council, 1 when Mr. W. P. Spencer drew attention to wholesale shooting in the country. '"Shooting around Spencer* ; ville Road and Stewart's Gully is • menace to human life." he said. "Gun- | men travel in cars, one man driving and the other shooting. They look liki a picture of the war in China. Insulai tors are smashed and our telephones I are out of order half the time." He ! added that houses in the district wert I riddled with bullets.
