THEFTS FROM HOTELS
CHARGES AGAINST PORTER SEVEN MONTHS* IMPRISONMENT [by telegraph OWN correspondent] PALMERSTON NORTH. Monday A series of minor thefts by a hotel porter named Leo John Wilson, aged 25 years, resulted in him being sentenced to seven months' imprisonment when he appeared before Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., in the Police Court. Detective-Sergeant A. B. Meikle. John said that Wilson was employed as a hotel porter in Wellington last year, and on October 26 he was given £1 by the licensee to use as change in his duties as a night porter. From customers he collected £4 6s, but did not hand it to the licensee, and the following morning he left for Wanganui, where he obtained work at various hotels. On November 8 accused resigned his position and left his personal belongings behind, continued Mr. Meiklejohn. When he returned for them later he stole a watch and chain and a pocket knife. Travelling to Palmerton North, he pawned the watch. Accused had been before the Court on three previous occasions, and at his last appearance was admitted to probation as a first offender by usinsr a false name.
