MUST STAY ON SHIP
WARNING TO TRIMMERS QUEEN STREET DISTURBANCE Following a disturbance in Queen Street on Friday night two trimmers from the steamer Matakana, James Moore, aged 49, and John Hartley, aged 19, appeared in the Police Court, before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., yesterday. Both were charged with behaving in a disorderly manner while drunk, in Queen Street, resisting a constable in the execution of his duty, and using obscene language. Hartley was further charged with damaging a suit, the property of Detective 'fiirgis, to the extent of 6s 6d. Senior-Sergeant Calwell said he saw the accused staggering down Queen Street, when there was a iarge number of people about. They were accosted by Constable Moore, who attempted to arrest the accused Moore, who was pulled away by Hartley. Another plain clothes constable arrived and assisted witness and Constable Moore to get the accused into a taxi-cab. Witness had his ribs bruised in the scuffle.
The magistrate asked the third officer of the ship if the accused could be kept- on board, but was told that that was not possible. For resisting the constable each was fined 40s, in default seven days' imprisonment. For using obscene language they were convicted and ordered to come up for sentence within three months if called on; and for disorderly behaviour they were convicted and discharged. Hartley was ordered to pay 6s 6d, the cost of having Detective Turgis* uniform cleaned. The magistrate warned the accused that if they did not remain on the ship, during its present stay in Auckland, and on its next visit before sailing for England, they would be brought up for sentence on the obscene language charge and sent to gaol.
