HOBSON BAY
IMPROVEMENT SCHEME WALL AND FLOODGATES DISCUSSIONS COMMENCED Proposals for improvements to Hobson Bay were submitted to the City Council last night by the Hobson Bay Beautification Society, but following an explanation by the Mayor, Sir Ernest Davis, that he had that day been in conference with tho chairman of the Auckland Harbour Board, the Hon. T. Bloodworth, * M.L.C., and the superintendent, Mr. J). Holderness, on the subject, tho matter was referred to the p;irks committee for consideration. The request by the Beautification Society was that the council should construct floodgates at a cost of £'3.'l6(), as well as a stopbank along the line of the main sewer at a cost of £.3200, and appoint an official to see that the flood-gates were opened every two weeks. It was stated that the objects of the society were the general beautification of the inner portion of the bay by the impounding of the water at the line taken by the sewer, and the formation of a children's playground of an area of five acres at present above high water mark. They also proposed the purchase and planting of flowering shrubs around the shores of the lake. It was stated that at the time of the construction of the sewer the Auckland and Suburban Drainage Board was required to construct a certain length of retaining wall in Hobson Bay when called upon and that £6500 had been earmarked for that purpose. In this connection tho parks committee recommended last night that the Drainage Board be called upon to construct the wall, but when the Mayor reported that discussions on the future treatment of the bay had been opened, the council referred tho committee's report back.
