BREAKING OF WIRE ROPE
WORKER'S LEG FRACTURED [bv telegraph—owx correspondent] iGPOTIKI, Monday While engaged in construction work at the new ltftukokore River bridge, on the Opotiki-Gisborne coastal highway, .Mr. F. Kerr, aged 27, married, a son of Mr. J. Kerr, of Opotiki, was injured iwhcn a wire rope snapped under a heavy strain. Mr. Kerr was working a winch moving a 10-ton pile driver into another position when tho rope parted and tho heavy block swung round, chopped through an iron rod and struck Mr. Kerr's leg, which was fractured below the knee. As the injured man fell he was caught by his father, who saved him from falling into the river. He was taken to the Opotiki Hospital. His condition is *«t r, .
