WAITAKERE DRIVE

SMALL SECTION OPEN USE DURING THE HOLIDAYS Only a portion of the Titirangi-Wai-atarua section of the Waitafcere Scenic Drive will be open to travellers during the holiday period as in the unfinished state of tiie road it is considered that the risk of allowing traffic to go right through to the West Coast Road will be too groat. The work of constructing the new road is in the hands of the Public Works Department, and the district engineer, Mr. F. S. Dyson, said yesterday that it was intended to leave the portion between Titirangi and Shaw Road open during the holidays. This portion of about 2J miles was in good order and could be safely negotiated. Motorists would thus be able to use the new drive as far as Shaw Road and could make a round trip either by coming back by way of Exhibition Drive or running on to Glen Eden. Beyond Shaw Road the. new drive formation was narrow and rough and as there would be 110 control after the men ceased work for the holidays it was considered too risky to. allow traffic through. There was also the risk of fire in the bush to be considered. Mr. Dyson said that it was intended to erect barricades just bqyond the Shaw Road intersection when the men stopped work for the holidays on Thursday.
