PLENTY OF WATER
AUCKLAND SUPPLIES AMPLE FOR HOT SUMMER RESERVES IN RESERVOIRS Even if tho present summer proves to be an unusually dry one Auckland will not be troubled by the possibility of a shortage of water, as the quantity in storage in the Waitakere Ranges is sufficient to supply all domestic and commercial needs for approximately five months.
In a report to tho City Council last night the city waterworks engineer, Mr. A. D. Mead, showed that the water in the reservoirs amounted to 1,470,000,000 gallons. Tho average daily consumption for November was 9,538,000 gallons, but should the continued dry weather cause the daily average to reach 11,000,000, which is well above tho maximum for any day in November, the stored supply would still be sufficient for nearly 134 days, without further rain. Tho report showed that the Huia Dam, with 524,000,000 gallons, and the Waitakere Dam, with 357,000,000 gallons, were slightly below the overflow level, but both the Nihotupu and Nihotupu auxiliary dams were full, the former holding 520,000,000 gallons and the latter 69,000,000 gallons. The consumption for last month drew off 286,145,000 gallons, which was 25,464,000 gallons greater than the amount used in November of last year.
