OLD STEAMER'S END

USE AS BREAKWATER LAST VOYAGE OF KAKAPO Having been cut down almost to the water's edge, the old steamer Kakapo was towed to the Whangaparaoa Peninsula on Saturday to serve as a breakwater at Shakespeare Bay. For the last 15 months she had been lying at the Western Viaduct being dismantled after having been bought from the Union Steam Ship Company by Mr. F. Appleton, of Newmarket. She was broken up and her largo triple expansion engine taken out. The winches, boilers, pumps and engines, all of which were in remarkably good order, are being sold. The Kakapo was originally the Scarisbrick, and was a well-known freighter in the inter-color|ial trade until she was laid up. She is 258 feet in length, with a beam of 36 feet, and an original tonnage of 1521. Her nnmo will be carried on in the Union Company's service by a new cargo steamer which was recently launched in England. The task of towing the old steamer to the VVhangaparaoa Peninsula was carried out by the Auckland Launch and Towboat Association.
