GRASS TBACK TESTS GREAT CHUM DOES BEST SPEED OF AGNES BINGEN MUNGA TANGI IN GOQD HL\RT The grass track at Epsom wsis in excellent order on morning, when some interesting trials wera registered bv horses engaged at the Auckland Trotting Club's Summer Meeting. Great Chum recorded the best half-mile in 1.6, while the novice, Agnes Bingen, again displayed dash in going 1.6 2-5. Argolis showed good form m recording 1.7, and other smart were registered by Bisifluth, 1.7 2-5; Munga Tangi, 1.8; Forest Jewel, 1.8 1-5; Handicapper, Ranfurly Lass and Bedford, 1.8 4-5; Petite Jewel, Blue Crest, Kewpie's Crest, 1.9; and Kewpie's Queen, 1.9 2-5. Bismuth (A. McGnrry) went away a second ahead of Argolis (11. August), who was followed a couple of lengths by Great Chum (S. M. August), from the mile and a-half. Great (/hum Improved with three furjongs to go and came on to win decisively in 3.28 2-5, one of the best efforts at the distance registered for some time. Great Chum, who is in good heart; went with dash to run. the last half in 1.6. Argolis went 3.31 and did his work well. Bismuth, who is not a good track horse, did'excellently to register 3.32. Agnes Bingen (D. 0. Jones), after an easy task on the dirt, worked a mile and a-half on the grass in 2.27 2-5. She was not hurried early, but covered the last half-mile in 1.6 2-5. Although giving away seven seconds, Agnes Bingen will start in the mile saddle race on the last day at Epsom. She will be ridden by N. L. Cfaig, who rode her at Hamilton. Handicapper's Fine -Finish Handicapper (G. H. Stubbs) led out from Star Pronto (B. Dyer) and Munga Tangi (L. Laver) and beat them over a mile and a-half in 3.35 4-5. After Handicapper had led for a mile in 2.27, Munga Tangi reached the Front to lead at the turn. However, Handicapper, with a good effort, got nip to win narrowly. It was his best effort foi; some time. ■ ••• Munga Tangi paced in fine style* going 3.35. He is very fit. Star Pronto took 3.39. Sunny Parrish (T. Carlyon) finished better, than Hillcrest (D.. O. Jones) at the end of a mile and a-quarter in 3.15. Sunny Parrish ran the last half in 1.11 4-5. Top Hand (S. M. August), after reaching the mile in 2.36, completed a , mile and a-half in 3.49. Pink Lady (W. Dyer) , started off two seconds before Star Pronto (B. Dyer), but the latter was holding her safely at the end of a mile and a-half in 3.56. Braemar (A. Bryce), Autumn Lu (G. H. Stubbs) and Pirate's Last (L. J. Mahoney) left the mile and a-half in that order, Pirate's Last doing best in the run home to win in 3.51< Forest Jewel Impresses Bronze King (G. Cole) was allowed two seconds' start from Bedford (D. Smith), Forest Jewel (L. Mitchell), and Queen Pot (S. M. August) over a mile and a-half. Bedford took charge crossing the top, but Forest Jewel finished full of running and won in 3.44, returning the good time of 1.8 1-5 over the last half-mile. Forest Jewel is improving. Bedford, who went 3.44 3-5, relished i his task, and is in snlendid condition. I Golden Maid (L. J. Mahoney) and I Marcus (A- Bryce) left the mile and ; a-half two seconds before Worthy ' Quest (G. H. Stubbs) but, after going | three furlongs, Golden Maid broke i badly and was pulled up: Ju Ju MeElwyn (D. Gillard) joined in at the mile, when the pace increased. Worthy Quest, with a good run at the three furlongs, was handy at the turn, to pass Marcus, but she could'not reach Ju Ju McElwyn, who gave a good display in going 2.27, the last half-mile in 1.13. Ju Ju McElwyn created a favourable impression in her first work . at Epsom. Worthy Quest showed some •improvement by registering 3.41 3-5 and 1.13 1-5. Marcus, who was not I pressed, ran 3.44. 1 Golden Maid was given another tryout, going a mile and a-half with Querida (W. Willets). After passing the mile in 2.39, Querida broke and Golden Maid trotted solidlv to record 3.53 4-5. Petite Jewel's Useful Effort Fighting for his head, Petite-Jewel (W. H. Andrews) trailed Frank Best (J. Funnell) to the mile in 2.34, where the latter increased the pace to lead round the home turn. Pacing easily, Petite Jewel ran past Frank Best to win in 3.43, and showed 1.9 for the half-mile. He has gone along the right way since his Hamilton success. Frank Best did not show much fight. Charteris Bay (G. Cole) went away, a second before Kewpie's Triumph (J. Gee) from the mile and a-halr, with Kaitaua (W. Gee) following a second later, but he tangled and lost several lengths. At the mile and a-quarter, Gipsy Light (A. Cole), carried Charteris Bay to the mile in 2.28 3-5. Kewpie's Triumph was almost with tho leader at the distance, but Gipsy Light scored nicely in 3.2. Kewpie's Triumph gave signs of returning form in going 1 3.39 ami 1.11 3-5. He may need some i racing before he can give of his best | again. Charteris Bay took 3.41. Kaij tana did not recover the ground he | lost early. Native Fern (S. M. August) and i Queen Pot (11. August), from a standing start, went together from the mile and a-quarter, but after reaching the six furlongs in 1.59 30, they were eased, to pull up a little further on. Gold Kip (W. Willetts), trotting without a mistake, ran a mile and ahalf in 3.50, the first mile in 2.37. He is making progress. .» Ranfurly Lass and Blue Crest Ranfurlv Lass (I). Gillard) led Blue Crest (A. Bryce), who, at the mile, reached in 2.33, .forced the pace. Ran? furly Lass finished fast to shade tho three-year-old in 3.41 3-5, the last half-mile in 1.8 4-5. She put dash into the final effort and is regaining form. Blue Crest performed creditably with a half in 1.9. Sequoia (W. H. Sammons) made good time, when he ran a mile in 2.25 1-5, the first half taking 1.15. He bears a well-seasoned appearance. Kewpie's Crest (W. Gee), assisted by Kewpie's Queen (J. Gee) over tho last 10 furlongs, worked a mile and ahalf in 3.42. He warmed up when Kewpie's Queen set a solid pace. The latter fought on resolutely and only surrendered the lead in the last 50 yards. Kewpie's Crest showed 1.9 for the half, and Kewpie's Queen, who ran 3.2 for her journey, 1.9 2-5. The filly is improving with each run. Lucky Love (D. Cook) attempted to concede Young Rodney (L. Laver) and Jewel Crest (W. Willetts) five seconds' start in a mile and a-half. Although judiciously handled, he failed after running 3.37. Young Rodney shaded Jewel Crest in 3.40 3-5. Young Rodnov trotted the last half in 1.10 3-5, and gave the impression that he is nearing his best again. Jewel Crest attracted attention in recording 3.41, the lasfc half in 1.11. < . . Aeriel Bell (A. Paton) was just beaten bv Trauan (C. G. Lee) after taking 1.17 for the_ first half, completing a mile in 2.27. On the dirt, the best trials were hy Manna s Son, two miles in 4.56; last ! halt' ;n I ID: and Anthony's Gift, in saddle, a mile in 2.20, last half in 1.9.7 The visiting horses, Indianapolis, Tempest, Willow Wave, Rongomai, StarwMi, Royal Doulton and Bittersweet, were restricted to strong jogging on the sand. Their healthy, well-trained-appearance drew favourable comment.;
