HAWERA TRAINING WORK.ON HEAVY TRACK LOWENBERG AND LICKEM NED CUTTLE BEATS ONE WHETU [liV TEL-J JRAI'H—OWN correspondent] HAWEKA, Saturday The heavy state of the going did not prevent good times being recorded on the Hawera tracks this morning. Tho outside of tho courso proper was open for fast work. After a slow beginning from a barrier start, Daisy Chain (Pepperill) and Golden Orchid (Toki) got to tho end of half a mile in 565. They could have improved on the time. Student Prince (Cole) did a round of strong pace work. Ho is in capital order for holiday racing. Lowenberg (Murray) and Lickem (Hawkes) put up an attractive gallop by running- five furlongs in 1.5. They came- home strongly. They should do well at the Manawatu meeting. Fox Moth (Murray) dashed over a quarter in 24 2-ss, and Captain Bligh recorded 27 4-ss. The latter is a two-year-okl colt by Captain Bunsby from Molleen Oge, and has done little fast work to. date. He was inclined to hang in down tho straight. Ned Cuttlo (Hawkes) beat One Whetu (Cole) by a couple > of lengths over seven furlongs in 1.36 3-5. Ned Cuttle had a good deal in reserve at the finish, but little notice need bo taken of One Whetu's track work, which was much the same before his departure for Feilding, where he raced impressively. Notium (Cole) completed j a round of strong pace work by sprinting up the straight. No fault can bo j found with his condition. j King Pluto (Toki) set out to jump | five hurdles. After negotiating the first three in dashing style, he crashed heavily at the fourth. Ho is a fast jumper, but inclined to stand off too far/ The horse was not injured and his rider escaped with a sprained wrist. The novice, Swift Sand, in J. Duggan's stable, will not bo a runner during the holidays. His stablemate. Plato, is causiiig his trainer anxiety and his prospects of standing another preparation appear to be remote.
