FRUIT SUPPLIES
CITY MARKETS BUSY SHIPMENT OF BANANAS Now that local fresh fruits are coming forward in quantity, the fruit sales at the City Markets are \econiing extremely animated. Strawberries' are, of course, the principal attraction, but iu addition hothouse tomatoes and gooseberries are available in good quantities and are meeting with a fair demand. Other fruits which are coming forward in increasing supply are plums, peaches, apricots and loganberries. The apricots are from the Thames district, while the gooseberries are mostly from the Waikato and the Wairarapa. A feature of the apricots is that many arc of poor quality. Cherries also are available, supplies of these coming from Hawke's Bay, the Wairarapa and the South Island. They were slow of sale at the City Markets yesterday. Some were of poor quality. Orange supplies are at present ample, the fruit being mainly from New South Wales, Victoria and Jamaica. Ripe bananas are plentiful. A spocial shipment of bananas is due on Tuesday morning by the Waipahi. The fruit will all be from Fiji and >lie shipment is expected to be a large one, ensuring ample supplies for Christmas. The Waipahi will carry in addition a large consignment of Fiji melons.
