CANADIAN BY-ELECTION FORMER PREMIER'S SEAT LOSS TO CONSERVATIVES By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright VANCOUVER. Nov. 30 At a by-election in Victoria, British Columbia, Mr. R. W. Mayhew (Liberal), was elected to the city seat rendered vacant by the death of Mr. S. M. Tolraie, the late Premier (Conservative), making a Government gain. The result was:— Mr. Mayhew 9117 Mr. McKelrey (Conservative) . . 7367 Mr. King Gordon (Commonwealth Federation) 6277 Mr. It. B. Bennett, Dominion Conservative leader, personally led the campaign, alleging that the Government is in secret agreement with Britain to abolish preference pacts so as to permit of a trade treaty with the United States as a world peace gesture. The Government leaders protested that there was no agreement and guaranteed to protect Canadian interests.
