FARM LABOUR SHORTAGE
MINISTER SUGGESTS REMEDY STEPS TO TRAIN WORKERS [BY TKLKGKAI'H —PRKSS ASSOCIATION] WELL IX G TON, "Wednesday In view of the publicity which is being given to the question of supplying farm labour requirements, the Minister of Labour, the Hon. H. T. Armstrong, has issued figures as at October 30 showing the actual position. These disclqse that on that date there were 166 reported vacancies for farm workers. In 123 of these case* the farmers stipulated that only experienced men should be supplied, while 43 farmers were willing to accept inexperienced men. A Dominion-wide survey showed only 20 experienced men were disengaged, but 239 inexperienced men were available, stated the Minister. The plain fact had to be faced, therefore, that experienced farm workers were not available. This \aas a condition with which employers in other occupations (builders and the metal trade, for instance) had to corftend, and they were taking steps to train new workers to overcome it,
